What it is
Mednieku (Hunters' Beer) is a pale lager from Piebalgas Alus, a small independent brewery in Jaunpiebalga, Latvia's Vidzeme region. The brewery has been producing beer since 1938, making it one of the oldest surviving craft operations in the Baltic states.
What sets Piebalgas apart is their commitment to open fermentation — a method most large breweries abandoned decades ago. Combined with a proprietary yeast strain cultivated entirely within the brewery's own microclimate, the result is a clean, refreshing lager with a distinctly local character. At 4.7% ABV, Mednieku pours a golden straw colour with a fine white head, offering a malt-forward base, gentle hop bitterness, and a smooth finish.
