What it is
Grey peas (Latvian: pelēkie zirņi) are a national staple of Latvia, different in character from standard green or yellow split peas. These are whole, dried peas of the Retria variety — a large-seeded type with a firm, meaty texture and a mildly earthy flavour once cooked. Latvian large grey peas carry EU Protected Geographical Indication status, recognising their distinctive regional identity.
They are traditionally simmered until tender and served warm with fried smoked bacon and caramelised onions — a dish eaten at Midsummer (Jāņi) celebrations and throughout the colder months. Valdo (SIA “Voldemārs”) has been packaging these peas in Latvia for decades.
