What it is
Ardealul's "Vegetal" is a vegetarian pate from the foothills of Transylvania, a household name on Romanian breakfast tables since the brand was founded in the late 1990s. Sunflower oil, garden vegetables and a careful blend of spices are cooked down to a soft, spoonable paste and sealed in a 200 g tin, fully cooked and ready to spread.
Open the tin, give it a stir and pile it onto fresh bread or warm toast; add a slice of tomato, a few rings of red onion or a sprinkling of chopped parsley. It also works as a quick filling for sandwiches and wraps, a base for canapes, or a savoury topping for boiled potatoes. Because there is no meat, it is a friendly choice during fasting periods and for vegetarian guests.
