Classic herring spread in a lighter style — chilled and ready to serve
EASTERN EUROPEAN TRADITION · HOUSE-MADE · 230 G
What it is
Spread generously on dark rye bread or crackers. Excellent with thinly sliced raw onion and a squeeze of lemon. Serve chilled straight from the fridge.
Forshmak is a chilled herring spread rooted in Ashkenazi Jewish cooking — a dish that travelled across Eastern Europe for centuries and became a staple at festive tables from Odessa to Vilnius. The word comes from Yiddish for “the first taste” — the bite that opens the appetite before the main course.
Our Light version keeps the hallmark depth of salted herring and sharp onion while balancing the richness with crisp apple and a lighter finish. Less heavy than the classic butter-laden spread, it is equally satisfying on a slice of rye.
