What it is
Baltic herring (salaka) has been at the heart of Eastern European fish cuisine for centuries. Irbe, a fishing enterprise based on the Latvian coast, selects the finest small herring from the Baltic Sea and packs them headless in a carefully blended spicy brine. The aromatic combination of allspice, black pepper, coriander and bay leaf gives the fish a well-rounded, lightly sharp flavour with a clean brine finish.
These fish are ready to serve straight from the jar — slice into portions and enjoy with rye bread, boiled potatoes or alongside a fresh onion salad. The 500 g pack is ideal for sharing or preparing traditional dishes such as forshmak or pickled herring salads.
