What it is
Kilka — also known as sprats or Sprotten in German — are small, tender Baltic fish that have been a staple of Eastern European pantries for generations. In this tin, they are lightly dusted in flour, fried until golden, then packed whole in a seasoned tomato sauce. The result is a ready-to-eat conserve that works straight from the tin, ladled over buckwheat kasha, or spread on dark rye bread.
The “Standard” tin format: whole, uncut fish in the classic Baltic style, popular across Russia, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany alike.
Ingredients
Sprats (whole, fried in rapeseed oil), tomato sauce (water, tomato paste, rapeseed oil, sugar, salt, onion, black pepper, bay leaf), wheat flour, acidity regulator (acetic acid).
