What it is
Kūčiukai are tiny, lightly sweet yeast-leavened biscuits studded with poppy seeds, baked every year in Lithuania for Kūčios — the solemn Christmas Eve supper. Shaped into small rounds and baked until golden, they carry a gentle crunch and a mildly nutty, faintly sweet flavour. Eaten dry as a snack or floated in a bowl of poppy seed milk (aguonų pienas), they are one of the twelve traditional meatless dishes served on the night before Christmas.
