What it is
The same Tula pryanik family as the plain fruit and condensed-milk versions from this factory, this time with cranberry worked into the apple filling. The berry's sourness cuts through the honey dough and sugar glaze, making this the version to reach for when the others read a shade too sweet. Tula gingerbread has been stamped with a carved wooden board since the seventeenth century; this one comes from the Yasnaya Polyana confectionery, named after Tolstoy's estate nearby.
