What they are

Mario's mini «baranciņas» — thin small wheat rings dusted with poppy seeds and baked dry until they snap between the teeth. Smaller and crunchier than classic sushki: closer to a savoury-sweet snack ring than to a biscuit. The poppy seeds give a faint earthy bitterness that grounds the lightly salted dough.

Made by Baltās Naktis SIA — the Mario Bakery — in Baloži, Latvia, who have been turning out small dry-baked rings, breadsticks and snack mixes for the Baltic and CIS market for years.

How to enjoy

• With tea or coffee — the classic Eastern-European "к чаю" pairing.
• Straight from the bag as a hand snack — these are small enough to graze on.
