What they are

Crunchy rye-and-wheat bread cubes, oven-dried (not deep-fried) and dusted with the unmistakable holodets s khrenom seasoning — the savoury jelly-and-sharp-horseradish flavour that, in Russia, sits at the heart of any festive cold platter.

Kirieshki has been the dominant Russian crouton brand since the late 1990s and is made by KDV Voronezh, one of the country's largest snack producers. Designed to be eaten by the handful with cold beer, kvass or just on the road — a small, salty, very moreish thing.

Rye flour, wheat flour, drinking water, refined deodorised sunflower oil, "aspic with horseradish" seasoning [salt, dextrose, maltodextrin, flavour enhancers (E621, E627, E631), mustard powder, yeast extract, acidity regulators (E330 citric acid, E262(ii) sodium diacetate), natural and nature-identical flavourings, anti-caking agent silicon dioxide], baker's yeast, salt.
