Barbaris Hard Candies 200g
The barberry boiled sweet that has been rattling around coat pockets for generations.
UKRAINE · BISKVIT-SHOKOLAD · 200 G
What they are
Barbaris is barberry — the small, fiercely sour red berry that grows wild across Eastern Europe — and this is the hard boiled sweet built around its flavour. Deep translucent red, sharp at the front and rounding into sweetness, each one twisted into its own printed wrapper. It is one of the oldest and most stubbornly popular sweets in the region: the sort of thing that lived in a grandmother’s handbag, a car glovebox, and the bottom of every school satchel.
They are made by Biskvit-Shokolad, the Kharkiv biscuit factory that has been running since 1896 and whose name is on the bag. Good with tea, good for a long drive, and genuinely useful for a sore throat — which is how half the people who buy them will tell you they are meant to be used.

Manufacturer’s declared figures; the kilojoule value is converted from the declared kilocalories. Ukrainian labels give energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate only — sugars and salt are not broken out. This is a boiled sugar sweet: essentially all of the carbohydrate is sugar.
Allergens & storage
Contains: no statutory allergens are declared in this recipe — it is sugar, glucose syrup, citric acid, flavouring and a natural colour. Always read the pack label before eating.
Store at 15–21 °C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Boiled sweets are hygroscopic: if the bag is left open in a warm kitchen the sweets will go tacky and stick together, so keep it sealed or decant into a jar.
