What it is

Maizes zupa is one of Latvia's most beloved desserts — soaked dark rye bread stewed with sugar, dried fruit, and warm spices, served chilled with a generous spoon of whipped cream on top. A festive-table classic that grandmothers across Latvia spent hours making from scratch.

This dry mix from AS Dobeles Dzirnavnieks (the historic Dobele Mill) gives you the soaked-rye-and-fruit base in one bag — just stir into water, simmer briefly, cool, and crown with cream. Same recognisable flavour, none of the day-of-baking work.


How to prepare

Tip the contents into a saucepan with about 1 litre of water (or half-water, half-milk for a richer version). Bring to a gentle boil, stirring, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5–10 minutes until thickened. Cool — this dish is traditionally served at room temperature or chilled. Top each bowl with a generous spoon of whipped cream, optionally garnished with fresh berries (cranberries are classic) or a dusting of cinnamon. Serve as dessert.
