What they are
Sushki — small, dry-baked wheat rings — are closer to a crisp than to a bagel, despite the usual English translation as "hard bagels". They start as a stiff, briefly water-boiled dough and finish dried in the oven until they snap between the teeth. Lightly sweet, with a clean vanilla note, lightly salted: built to soak up tea rather than stand alone.
The oval shape is the «Дядя Ваня» twist — they rest neatly on the rim of a tea glass while they soften. This is part of the «Чай вдвоём» ("Tea for Two") line, a Russian-style bakery range distributed for the European market by Söbera Group in Germany.
How to enjoy
- Dunk in hot black tea — the canonical Russian way. The sushka softens to just-right in two or three seconds.
- With kefir, milk or coffee — any hot or cool drink does the same softening trick.
- With jam, honey or sweetened condensed milk — a child's after-school standard.
- On a cheese-and-fruit board — they're neutral enough to carry blue or aged cheeses.
- An unexpected pairing: with smoked fish and a tot of vodka — it works.
