What it is
Matje herring is young Atlantic herring harvested at peak condition, before the fish develops roe. Lightly cured in salt, it has a noticeably softer, richer flavour than ordinary pickled or spiced herring — mild, buttery, and deeply satisfying.
The fillets are packed in oil and ready to serve straight from the jar. Arrange on dark rye bread, layer with boiled potatoes and dill, or use as the centrepiece of a simple Baltic-style plate.
