Korjushka (European smelt, Osmerus eperlanus ) is a small silver fish caught in the Baltic Sea and its connected rivers and lakes. In Russia, and St. Petersburg in particular, it holds near-legendary status — the springtime korjushka run is the first sign of the season, and the fish's fresh cucumber-like aroma is something locals recognise instantly.
