The emerald-green tarragon soda that Georgia gave the Soviet Union.

What it is

Tarkhun is one of the great Soviet lemonades. It was created in Tbilisi in the late 1880s, flavoured with tarragon, the herb Georgians call tarkhuna. It is bright green, sweet and fizzy, with a fresh, slightly aniseed herbal taste that is unlike any Western soda. For many people who grew up in the USSR, it is simply the taste of summer.

Chernogolovka makes its version with a real tarragon infusion. It is sweetened with a mix of sugar and sweeteners, so it has about half the calories of the classic full-sugar recipe. Serve it well chilled, on its own, over ice with a sprig of mint, or with grilled meat. It comes in a 0.5 L glass bottle.
