What it is

Napoleon is the classic layered cake of Ukraine and the whole former Soviet world: thin puff-pastry sheets stacked with custard cream, then finished with a coat of pastry crumbs. Vatsak, the Ukrainian confectionery house, calls it its all-time bestseller. Their version has crisp, flaky layers and a custard cream with a gentle vanilla flavour.

The whole 1.9 kg cake comes ready-cut into 16 portions, so you can take out as many slices as you need, whether for a party table or tea through the week.
