What it is
A canned, ready-to-eat kasha of toasted buckwheat (grechka) cooked with pieces of chicken in its own broth, lifted with onion, salt and a leaf of bay. The 525 g tin holds a proper one-pot supper: the nutty, dark-roasted buckwheat grains have soaked up the chicken juices and turned glossy and savoury, the meat is poached soft enough to fall apart between fork and spoon, and the broth between the grains stays just moist enough to feel like home cooking. Open it, tip it into a saucepan, warm it through for four or five minutes, and a hot main course is on the table without a peeler, a board or a single grain of dry rice in sight.
Grechka with chicken is the lighter cousin of the heavier kasha tins on Slavic shelves, the one you reach for on a weeknight when you want a hot supper but not a stew. Eat it straight from the pan with a knob of butter and a fresh grind of black pepper for lunch alone at the desk. Serve it on a deep plate alongside a spoon of sour cream, a salted cucumber and a wedge of rye bread for a proper evening meal. Pack a tin for the dacha weekend, the long-train journey, the fishing trip or the cold mornings on the building site, where a small stove and ten minutes are the only kitchen you have. Keep a couple in the cupboard for nights when nothing in the fridge looks like dinner and you still want to eat something honest and warm.
